What is the GYROTONIC® Method?
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® reflects a new paradigm in the understanding of human movement. This work uniquely prepares us to respond with resilience and good will to the demands of the modern environment. The arching, spiraling, undulating, pulsating movements are breath centered, rhythmic, and of sophisticated and utterly natural spatiality.
There is a pleasant sensuality inherent in the work, it feels good doing it, and feels good afterwards.
There are two main branches of this work, GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®. While the work as a whole is referred to as GYROTONIC® movement, more specifically, the term is used to mean work on various pieces of equipment designed by Juliu Horvath, the founder of the work.
GYROKINESIS® exercise refers to work done without the equipment, rather using chairs or low stools for seated exercises, and mats for work on the floor, seated, on all fours, kneeling, prone, supine, and side-lying. Classes often end with standing and traveling exercises.
